Palma airport is paralysed by huge storm, with terminal flooded and flights diverted

Palma de Mallorca Airport, a vital travel hub for the Spanish island, descended into chaos after a massive storm swept through the region. The downpour, bringing up to 9 cm of rain in a single hour, overwhelmed drainage systems, causing flooding within the terminal building and on runways.

Airport officials were forced to halt operations entirely, prioritizing passenger safety. This resulted in the diversion of hundreds of flights, including those from major UK airports. Videos circulating online showed extensive flooding, with water cascading through the ceiling of duty-free shops and reaching concerning levels in some areas.

While the airport authority, Aena, activated its emergency plan, frustrated travelers faced delays and uncertainty. Aena advised passengers to stay in contact with their airlines for updates on re-scheduled flights or possible alternative destinations.

The storm's impact extended beyond the airport, with reports of flooding in other parts of the island. As clean-up efforts commence, it remains to be seen when Palma Airport will resume normal operations.
